2013 – Myoko Kogen – Japan

After a quick scouting trip to Myoko Kogen in 2012, it was clear that this town had to play host to the 2013 tour. Considered another of the jewels in the Nagano crown, it actually resides in the Niigata prefecture.

The 2013 season was amazing for Myoko and we were greeted by a 5 metre base upon our arrival. The skies then opened up and blessed us with another 1.8 metres of fresh powder spread out across each night.

The primary slopes of Akakura Kanko and Akakura Onsen provided plenty of diversity for everyone, as did the day trip to Suginohara where on-piste and off-piste enthusiasts found what they were looking for. The day trip to Seki Onsen proved to be the absolute high point of the trip for the advanced skiers and snowboarders. This quant family-operated mountain had just two chairlifts, one groomed run, one restaurant … and as many lines of fresh powder as you could ever wish for. Photos of chest-deep powder abounded.

Following the Hakuba experience, Discovery again booked a private lodge that was ski-in and ski-out. The incredibly gracious hosts and Myoko Tourism made us feel so very warm and welcome, and there were lots of late nights sat around the fireplace in deep discussion.

In 2013 we hired the services of a professional photographer and some amazing shots came from this. These photos were complimented by the numerous helmet cams that went into the compilation of a video showing the highlights of this amazing tour.

At the final night dinner of very traditional Japanese fare, some of which we helped cook, Daniel Kriss took home the King of the Mountain trophy making two consecutive wins by a snowboarder.

"Wow! What a fantastic tour organised by a fabulous team, Discovery Snow Tours really know how to put on a memorable tour. My snowboarding improved dramatically over the week-long tour thanks to the watchful eye, guidance and support of the wonderful team. I would highly recommend Discovery Snow Tours to anyone."
