2007 – Furano – Japan
In 2007, Discovery Snow Tours lead its first trip to Japan and a love affair was instantly born. The light dry powder snow of Japan, linked with temperatures of -12 on a sunny day made Furano as close to heaven as a skier can get. Although Furano a one big country town that just happens to have an awesome mountain at it's backdoor, it has kept its rustic charm. It is also full of warm friendly locals who are only to happy to help.
One of the highlights of the 2007 trip was that the World Cup for snowboarders was held in Furano while we were there. We watched some of the downhill and boarder cross, and of course shouted our support for Andrew Burton in the half-pipe competition.
We skied the mountains of Furano, Kitanomine, Kamui and Tomamu. Snowmobiling in the back-country near Tomamu was breathtaking as our guides took us to a mountain top for the most amazing panoramic views.
